Apply even if you think you are underqualified. The people deciding are looking for fit, not for a perfect score, and the applicant who did not apply is the only one guaranteed not to get it.

Visa timelines are the thing that ruins these. Start the moment you are accepted, and ask the organisers for an invitation letter immediately.

Write down who you want to meet before you go. Conferences are conversations with talks around them, and nobody has ever regretted planning that part.
