Check whether they want the application in a particular format before you build it in another. Some will reject on format alone, and it is the least interesting way to lose.

Apply even with no formal experience. Say what you have actually done, including unpaid and informal work, and name the gap rather than hoping nobody notices it.

Where there is a general pool that departments select from, a broad strong profile beats a narrow specialist one. You are being picked from a list, not matched to a job.
