A prize is not funding. Build the plan so it works without winning, and treat the prize as acceleration rather than as the budget.

Legitimate competitions do not charge an entry fee to consider you for a cash prize. Some arts and film awards do charge small fees, so check the organisation rather than assuming either way.

Start the documents before the essay. References, transcripts and proof of status are the things that take weeks and are outside your control. The writing is the part you can do in a hurry; the paperwork is not.
