If you are presenting, find out the room and the format. A twenty-minute talk and a poster are different pieces of work.

Ask whether travel support exists before you decide you cannot afford it. It is frequently available and almost never advertised prominently.

Check whether they want the application in a particular format before you build it in another. Some will reject on format alone, and it is the least interesting way to lose.
