Is IELTS required for every masters scholarship?

Everyone tells me to book the test, but it costs about a month of my salary. I have seen a few universities that accept a letter from your school saying you were taught in English. Has anyone actually got in that way?

Yes, it is called a Medium of Instruction letter. Plenty of universities in the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands accept one if your whole degree was taught in English. It is never listed on the scholarship page. It is on the university admissions page, under English language requirements. Check there first.

This is right. I got into two programmes with an MOI letter and no test. One thing to add: ask your registrar early. Mine took five weeks to produce it.

Thank you. I looked and my first choice does accept it. That is the test money saved.

Worth saying the opposite too. Some countries need the test for the visa even if the university does not. Germany and Canada both caught people out last year. Check the visa page, not only the university.
