Ask whether travel support exists before you decide you cannot afford it. It is frequently available and almost never advertised prominently.

Write down who you want to meet before you go. Conferences are conversations with talks around them, and nobody has ever regretted planning that part.

If there is a word limit, use most of it. Coming in at half the limit reads as not having much to say, whether or not that is true.
