Include your own time even if you are currently working unpaid. A budget that treats labour as free tells the funder the project stops the day somebody gets a job.

Add a contingency of around ten percent. Every project has something break, and a budget with no room for it becomes a series of awkward emails.

If there is a word limit, use most of it. Coming in at half the limit reads as not having much to say, whether or not that is true.
